My company HQ is about 1/2 way out Long Island. Snowing there now and calling for 18-24 inches. Nobody is planning on being at work tomorrow.

Here in Maine we have to go line up at the grocery store and get milk, bread and toilet paper- I think it is a State law. I've got the truck gassed and the extra shovel in it and put RainX on all the windows- that helps when it is cold like this. Told my employees not to bother coming in. We get a lot of hype about these things now, but this could be the real deal. I love it- makes me feel alive. Hopefully some urban CC skiing tomorrow. Might not be able to make it to work myself where the workshop is.

When you read history about the great blizzards of the past, it is clear that often sailors couldn't tell the difference between a bit of bad weather and a proper gale, and too often they got caught out. The Portland Gale of 1898, named for the steamship Portland that sank, took 150 boats and 400 people. Yes it was an early winter storm in late November, but it would be easy to find a midwinter example. It was one thing for the fishing schooners to get caught- they were out for long periods- but the coasting schooners often made the choice as not too much wind could really help them on their way. My guess is that this storm will even keep the tankers in port tomorrow, and not much stops them.

Not a problem for me. I run a satellite office South of the Mason DIxon Line. We are due for a trace to 2" at most. The ramp up is pretty quick. It's been snowing since earlier this morning some 50 miles North in Catonsville, where my son is attending his first classes of the Spring (sic) semester. They will probably get 4-6" total.

I love the "potentially historic" part of the notice that Semi posted at the top of this thread.

Definitely coming down hard here (coastal RI) now. Like Maine, it is one's civic duty to make a run on water, bread, and milk every time there is a hint of a storm--- you never know, it could be '28 again. As I was standing in line, I laughed when I realized that I am in my element-- I live without power and running water, what is to worry about? Today is just another day. Better than the average in fact cause in the AM I hope to cross country ski down the middle of the streets.

As forecast by the locals (not the weather channel) we received a trace of snow overnight with flurries passing this morning. My Long Island HQ received 18" with a couple left to fall this morning so on the low end of the 2-3 Feet (Run for your lives!) that would approach historic.

Keith, Anom, other in the NE - How did you make out?

Looking out from inside, I'd say we got 5" or so overnight here in Stamford.î Not as much wind as I expected either. Pretty chilly at 17F.

They say we'll get more through the course of the day.

Hard to say-- very gusty winds all night and continuing this morning. The winds mean drifting and its hard to tell the actual depth of the snowfall. One side of my shop (boathouse where I spent the night--- coal stove!) has 3" and the next corner has a 30" drift piled up. The power stayed on here but there are reports of scattered outages. Snow falling heavily at the moment and near white-out conditions as there is fog mixed in. Total ban on travel still in place at the moment so I'm contemplating putting on the cross-country skis and making/letting Scout (the wonder dog) practice ski-juring as we cover about 2 miles to Wickford Harbor where the boat was floating snug in her slip when I last checked on her yesterday afternoon. But that would mean getting up out of the moaning chair next to the Godin stove where the coffee is going down good this morning....

There must be an old sailor's term for sitting with a bit of small stuff and practicing splices 'n knots... Sounds like a great way to sit out the blow.

(I have to stay away from Wikipedia.... just tried to look this up and wasted 15 minutes correcting various nautical definitions. The infinite time sink!)
