Jeez, you guys can cover a lot of ground in a few days!

Eric -- ouch!! Hope that new mattress treats you well and you heal up fast and can get back at it.

"A painful polyradiculopathy" -- I think that's gonna be my new favorite alliterative utterance when I'm suffering. Soon as I figure out how to pronounce it.

As for the rest of this thread, I cook and clean and do laundry and, like Bob, I'm good at it. I also open doors and carry bags and generally do the traditionalist/ sexist/ chivalrous thing every chance I get. I like women doctors at least as much as male doctors -- maybe more. Most of them that I encounter seem to have less ego in the game, and generally seem more accepting of my inquiries. I'm like Beau and Keith -- I show up loaded with everything I can learn about whatever I have going on, and try to do the "informed consumer" thing. I want to be an active part of whatever decisions get made about my body and what's to be done to it.

Out on the bike for a few miles today and discovered distressing weakness in my left quads. This could be life-changing, but its early and there's a fair chance of it coming back to something llke before.

Eric,

Glad you're feeling better. I took some friends out yesterday on S'agapo and my back is bitching about it today. I've got to get into the doc to see what's going on, damn it. I also managed to pickup something around the prop (I think) as it's making a click click click sound as I power along like a fishing weight hitting the bottom of the hull.

Ugh. I hate the sound of both of those little problems. Be nice to your back and if your allopath has anything constructive to offer, I'll be impressed. Upright posture and bipedal locomotion are great and all, but they really need to bring the main armature thing out in nice milled Al or Ti with ceramic articulating surfaces and replaceable silicone bushings. I'd pay a million cash today.

My friend Rich had that problem. Above a certain rpm he heard a clanking sound from the area where his strut was. It was loud and it scared him. He called me for advice. I had little. So he sailed as much as he could and limped into the next harbor. He had scuba gear aboard so he decided to dive and take a look at his prop.

Upon entering the water he noticed his anchor hanging down about 25' below the waterline.
He was singlehanding and when he pulled his anchor he would have to go below to hand flake the last few feet. In the process at his last anchorage he had hand flaked the chain but forgotten to go back and pull in the last 25' of chain.
Above that critical rpm and boat speed the anchor and chain swept back to actually hit his prop.
This is a true story. I can't make this shit up.

They work OK if you're a fish, even a snake. Evolution fucked us over.
And we (as in guys) didn't get multiple orgasms, either.

Now it's my turn to be laughing!! Yes, god or Darwin needs to give us a rebate on back design!! Sadly, nothing in evolution helps with the period of life after we're reproduced and sent our progeny into the world.

We do need a re-design on the back.

Speaking of which, did you'll see the spine of Richard III??? That guy must have been in pain!

OM and BP, I'm pretty sure the anchor is not the problem, as it is safely stored in a cockpit locker. But, I love that story!!!

Back to laying down and watching the Grammy awards.

Oh, that's far too simplistic a view of human evolution, which pretty clearly must select for genes at the group, as well as the individual, level. Successful tribes need cagey old farts to remember how the weather works and where to catch rats for dinner and such old farts need to be mobile enough to walk to the next camp.

Richard had some back problems for sure.

Thanks, Bob. You know how I love to complain.

Leg still hurts like a sonofabitch when I stand around and the weakness is still there. Pain goes away with prolonged walking and the bike feels good. Learned a whole bunch of crazy new exercises for the core and hips. Wish I'd gotten religion about this stuff a year ago.

Hoo-boy,

Pelvic tilts
Bridges
Clam shells
Planks
4-ways with a Thera-band
Step-ups, forward and sideways, with a very slow eccentric phase
Monster walks
Hamstring stretches
Back extensions

I think most these are on the web, but there's a whole cognitive side to recruiting the hell out of the core (and not hurting yourself, presumably) when you do them and I would strongly advise learning with a trainer.

I am going to declare and end to the hospital part tomorrow, having pretty much learned the concepts. Now it's up to me to practice it for the rest of my life. It's great stuff and I wish I had learned and taken it seriously it years ago.

Pain is much better and I extended my morning, fat-tire, bike commute to about 13 hilly miles this a.m.

RIck, you're right; it is all chick stuff. Don't tell Solo.

Good to hear Eric. My back problem started when I was bike commuting 32 miles a day when I worked for Carter. Never got on a bike again.
