Hi Bob

Yep! We got it! Thank you so much! My older daughters were really excited when I told them it was coming. They really want to try their hand at it. One of them plays guitar and has played bass a little. I'll send pics of them with it.

How are you dpoing on the bass? Are the girls giving it a try?
I wish I were there to help them. Don't let them use a pick. It will handicap their development. God gave us ( most of us) five fingers on each hand. Learn to use them all. Picks are for wussies.

That's a nice looking J-bass, Bob. What year is it? I've never used a pick.

Keith:
That is a '62 re-issue that I have owned for about 30 years. It's a keeper.

In truth there are times I might use a pick if the tune needs that sound.. But I prefer to use thumb and two fingers.

They've 'plucked' it a little. My middle kid doesn't use a pick on guitar. Doesn't like picks. I use a pick on guitar because I don't know how to play. There's no worry for 'handicapping my development' ;)

However, I will be playing without a pick on the bass. Will have some pictures this weekend.

I keep thinking about that 4-string acoustic bass gee-tar I was playing. It was resonant enough that I could finger pick it, like a gee-tar. That was fun to play, maybe I shuda bought it.... hmmm.....

Yeah, and since you're married and have kids, it's okay to look gay when you're playing it.

Rick:
I'd love to see a photo of your gals with the bass. If that bass could talk your girls wouldn't touch it.

It reminds me of many years ago, Spike was about 12 years old. My buddy Andy had received a Martini making "kit" for Christmas. We had our after Christmas jam going on and Andy and his wife were busy making the martinis. Pretty soon none of us were capable of making more martinis but Spike was and he took over bartending duties. He did a very good job. I couldn't even look at a martini for about 5 years after that. Spike was never a drinker but he loved making drinks and he was damn good at it.

Yesterday I spent 2 hours and played 22 guitars over at Sylvan Music, our best local shop. After trying Taylor, Martin, etc.... on and one, I ended up with a Santa Cruz Dreadnaught, spruce top with mahogany back and sides (Pictures to follow sometime). I've never had a big ole D and this one spoke to me. It's a joy to play and my fingertips are raw after a long night on the fretboard.

I was driving the Admiral nuts with lots of loud open cords! The D can certainly fill a room!

These guys do nice stuff with wood: http://www.santacruzguitar.com/

Mine is like this pic but was custom built with mahogany sides and back, the sound seems more balanced than the rosewood D's.

Image

There's a funny story about this particular D. It was custom ordered from the factory, they don't normally build them with mahogany, and the guy couldn't make the final payment. The store picked it up from the factory in 2003 and it has been hanging way up high at the store for 10 years! The manager said I was the first person to play it in three years, other than him. He has been playing it about once a month and keeping fresh strings on it. He couldn't understand why it hadn't sold in all those years, but he made me promise to bring it back so he could play it once in a while. When playing it side-by-side with the rosewood version, it's much more balanced, not so much base and high. The rosewood version is a bit like having the "Loudness" button pressed on the radio. Mine is nice and discrete, no mother of peral on the neck, no brick-a-brac around the back or head, just wood - yummy wood.

Beau:
That looks like a beauty. I can't wait to play it. Your story is similar to the story of my Guild. Can't hurt to have ten years of age on the guitar.
Did you play any Larivees? I have my Larivee back at the factory right now having a new bridge put on. It's really Max's guitar but I have had it up here for a whiel. The bridge split right through the middle. Jean Larivee thought it might have "dried out". I find that hard to believe considering the axe has lived it's life on the waterfront in the PNW. Nothing dries out up here. They are charging me $50 for the repair. That's reasonable.

Looks like a beauty Beau.
I can attest to the Guild .. It's a little tease ... one of, if not the best tones of a Dreadnaught I have played and the action is easy.

Bob,

I did play one Larivee. You obviously know that there is a lot of variation between individual gee-tars and even within the 4 SCG Ds that I played you wouldn't have believed they were made by the same guys. (So much for ordering a gee-tar without playing it!) As to the bridge cracking, I'm not buying the "drying out" senario unless he happened to build that bridge with green wood. That happens at times, especially for some of the little bits. Inventory control on wood is a BIG deal for a lot of these guys. My wooden bike guys (RENOVO) have a massively complex computer application that tracks age, moisture content, etc... for each of the bits of wood they build bikes from; they're the best I've seen at this.

We'd love to have you come by our place and play the gee-tar, sit on the deck and watch the boats, have a drink, whatever. Any time. If we head up to the PNW I'll bring the SCG-D along and we can make a little noise.

Beau:
In larivee's defence he did mention green wood for the bridge. This is one of those guitars kind of like yours. I was looking for a nice axe for Max for Christmas and I went into the "expensive room" at the music store and started pulling down guitars. The this one just jumped out at me and I bought it. Sometimes one guitar just connects with you.

He can't be making any money repairing it for $50.

Here in Oz Maton are the bees knees for acoustic guitars, I have a classical and a twelve string.
Took the classical back to the factory after 6 years, too much neck bend
They dismantled it and rebuilt it, massive internal blocking now around the neck base.
Charged me nothing, but thanked me for bringing it back to the factory.

I'll google Maton guitars.

OK, I checked out Maton guitars. Pretty axes. Not too keen on the electric models. I'd love to try one of their basses. I have never heard of them before. I have watched Tommy Emanuel but he never holds still long enough to read the head stock.

Have you given her any Bruno Giuranna? His Beethoven trios with Anne Sophie Mutter and Msistislav Rostropovich are incredible.

For various reasons I was just reading through this old thread. Just bought the Beethoven trios on itunes. We have a conservatory a couple of miles away. I love chamber music and so I'm delighted Adele just started with a new group. The violinist just bagged out so they're down to viola and cello. The cellist is good and the teacher plays violin so she can help. Apparently there are some duets for cello and viola.

Here's another song I've hacked together...

It started out as an experiment with various bridges and then it just turned into something.

and this is the guitar I play. It's the most valuable piece of gear I have...because I got it for free
