If it ain't about boats, it should go here.

WGBH Boston does the service from St Pauls Cathedral on Christmas eve and if you're in the GMT plus 8 time zone means it lands on Christmas morning ; really wonderful service.

Rode to work in the empty streets and warm rain. There's not a soul on the corridor. Now I'm going to ride home again while the WXRAD looks good.

Merry Christmas, Scantlingers. From an abnormally warm New England @ 70 degrees and sunny-ish.

Merry Christmas to all. It is a clammy 75º F here.

Oldest son and family live in town, second son and his family arrive from SC tomorrow, daughter was supposed to arrive from NYC last night, but is now scheduled to get here this evening (she calls buying an airline ticket from NY a lottery ticket), youngest son arrived from New Orleans this afternoon, so we all be together for roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, etc. tomorrow evening. We will probably be in shorts. Sunday looks like a sail: 75º with 10+ knots.

For my recent birthday, SWMBO got me a beautiful teak folding table for when we have Champagne and lobster on TONIC.

Merry Christmas everyone. Ella really wanted to make a Christmas snowman, but is pretty happy this morning anyway. Layton got to tear paper and try unsuccessfully to shove it in his mouth.

Meat in the ovens. Veggies ready to cook. Just came in from a boat ride in the skiff watching my daughter try out her paddleboard (boy was that hard to hide for the last 2 months). I would not have bet on a bikini clad lovely out on the creek on Christmas day. 72 degrees outside. AIr conditioner on to take out some humidity before friends arrive in an hour.

We are running the AC too. Very muggy. Worked out in short tights and jersey this am and had to rinse the top tube. That has to be a first for Xmas.

There is very little as wonderful as having a 3 year old climb up on the bed before dawn and whisper: "Opa, it's Christmas and everyone else is still sleeping. Let's go peek!!"

Off we went, quite as mice.... We looked around and shook a few boxes, then had tea while we waited and watched the sun rise.

After the rest of the sleepy heads were awake.....

Jeez, you guys have cute grandkids! My degenerate spawn brought me a bottle of 123-proof poteen and we are now seeing how well it goes on top of good champagne before Kékfrankós.

I cooked a rib roast for xmas eve. Highlight on the day itself was my mother's traditional French Canadian tourtière (meat pie).

They made it illegal to cook French Canadians here, you must have a good butcher.

I love shepherd pie. Tourtière filling is all meat, I think traditionally a combination of ground pork and beef. Importantly, no potatoes. Quite extravagant.

Sounds delicious, especially when it's your mom's. Tonight, my brother is concocting a seafood stew with fennel and saffron and we are presently two bottles into the untra brut. It's enough to give a man religion.

I admire anyone who can cook with fennel. I always seem to overdo it. A little goes a long way.

We had a standing rib roast, a roasted turkey breast and a small pork roast (and a last minute couple added to the guest list). Lynne outdid herself on the beef. Somehow we managed to time it so it all came out of 3 ovens at the same time so it was rest, carve, serve all at once. Tonight is a random sauce (cream, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, etc) over zucchini "noodles" with French bread. Works for me. Rib bones are being reduced for stock and a hearty soup. Turkey bones to soup tomorrow.

Oh, man!

Fennel is not my favorite thing, but it's just right for fishy French stews.

Stock making and especially using bones and marrow is a lost art. Yum. And so healthy.
