If it ain't about boats, it should go here.

Ok, so I've been asking my step father to share his pictures from his 1966 cross of the Atlantic on the second Puffin. 3 years later I've run out of patience. :D This boat was built by S&S in Taiwan and unbeknownst at the time, the yard had left out a tie-rod in the coachroof which was stove-in later in the Med. The boat was then quietly sold and a third Puffin was built, but this time by Aage Walsted. The second Puffin is still around.

What clearing in used to be like used to be like in Horta: a captain, a coxswain and an inspector in white gloves. Apparently the coxswain sat 2 feet away from the captain and a responded to a bell.

All these photos were taken by my step-father. He's an excellent photographer and a great shipmate. I hope to get more cruising time with him on my boat.

The story goes that when my step-father's father, Graydon Smith, was building the winches for Intrepid, he asked Olin for someone with whom he could safely end his sons to sea. The recommendation came back as Eddy.

By the time I got to sailing, Eddy was already in his late 70's, and his passage making days were largely done, so anything here misidentified or incorrectly recalled is my fault. My mother did a passage or two to Bermuda with him and brought Puffin back from Tortola at least once. Puffin was wood and maintained immaculately; stored in the water year year and pulled out once a year for varnishing and painting. The hull was fair enough to look fiberglass and he had an interesting strategy of only varnishing vertical surfaces. The third edition of Puffin has an internal steel frame and was designed to be lifted by a single point for easy transport. According to Cabot Lyman, if he were to build the boat today, they would need to use some pretty advanced materials and techniques to get the boat to be the same weight and ballast ratio.

Poor weather never phased Eddy, even when boats nearby were getting pitchpoled in the Gulf Stream. Both my step-father and my mother claimed that Eddy would just sit on the settee while the gimbling table would reach as high as his chin and smile. Puffin had two companions ways - once for the crew forward and one aft for the skipper - not something that would fly today.

Very good photography, especially considering the era.Great eye for the moment.

Kodachrome was 12 ASA at the time. At least it survives, being several layers of black and white emulsions. Early Ektachrome is vanishing.

Nothing like a picture of the navigator with his sextant to give the feel of voyaging the way it used to be done.

Amazing Jamie. My family didn't sail, so I'm pretty envious. I'm just lucky to have grown up near a yacht club, had sailing lessons, and gotten invited along enough on OPB's to give me the fever. It's pretty obvious that the fever simply runs in your family. Way cool.

I live vicariously through reading about your offshore exploits!

My dad came to sailing late in life. My step-father came to me late in life, through sailing. I am just a grown up Opti brat.

re: sextant pictures

When I was about 21, I thought it would be cool if, once I had a boat of my own, I could get a picture of me standing on the afterdeck taking a compass sight while the wind vane steered the boat. Events frustrated me at every point. GPS made sextant work unnecessary, electromechanical autopilots have replaced wind vane systems, boats no longer have afterdecks, and I have done all my sailing in LIS where it's difficult to get a true horizon.

Great pictures. I've slowly come to realize that pictures taken on occasions when I was present are now pictures of a different time and place. I need to put in some effort to scan slides my father shot- things like the 54 hurricanes in Maine that I remember. Thanks for reminding me.

This is way off topic. I thought I'd post it as a challenge to the doctors on board. What's going on here?

Don't worry. The story has a happy ending.

I figured it was something congenital in the hip joint, but I had no idea what to call it. Glad the tyke is OK.

Broken femur. Presumably broken in the caesarean delivery of her and her brother.

Four days old in the top picture. She was in traction for about 6 days. Traction was three lbs. She weighed six lbs so her little bottom was barely on the bed.

In the picture, Grandma is trying to figure out how to feed her.

We took the high-schoolers out sailing on MAYAN on Sunday. With the wind blowing about 18 and MAYAN sailing upwind I went below to video what our main saloon feels like. You can see she doesn't heel much. You can also hear the people talking in the cockpit and the footsteps of a crewmember coming below. Needless to say, she's quite underway.

Any gear heads here? This the back room, so to speak, where Mystic Seaport keeps the engines in its collection.

I decided to reanimate this thread instead from clogging the Mayan thread with miscellaneous schooner pictures. Here is some wing and wing action.

I love it. Wish I had my father-in-law's sextant. The last one in the family faded away. :(

My plastic one does work just fine. But where's the romance in that??
