A common term among doctors for motorcyclists is "organ donor" due to the high rate of stupidity and injuries.

I owned a motorcycle before, but sold it to finance my divorce. I've been seeking the right replacement for quite sometime. My father owns a Chieftain and recommended the brand highly for its styling and reliability. I bought this lightly used Indian Scout so its already taken its biggest depreciation hit which put it at a price that I was comfortable paying. Plus, buying it in the off-season helped with the price negotiations.

I really should have just bought another Yamaha Warrior and avoided all the negative connotations associated with this brand name but I really liked the styling.

Boy can I attest to that. At a Bermuda Race Week one of my crew nearly bought a piece of the farm there. Thankfully, he lived. But WHO RIDES LIKE THAT? Drunken tourists on mopeds, that's who.

It IS stylish, although looks a little uncomfortable for any passengers...

I had the same thing happen to me many years ago, I was about 28 or 29. The cop expected a teenager (on a BMW??) and just gave me a warning for being about 10 over.

I owned a series of motorcycles in college, culminating in one of the first CB750 Hondas imported in 1969 (those original "sand cast" models are worth a bit of money now). Had three accidents, only one of which was my fault, and that was the only one that didn't hurt me. My left knee continues to remind me of the woman who made a left turn right through me when I was stopped. After moving to Maine I decided I didn't like the notion that someone else might kill me despite my best intentions, so I sold the bike to someone who wrecked it the first day he had it, sigh.

That is a long way of saying "be careful and have fun". And I do mean the have fun part- as the owner of a Caterham that is just one step up on the safety scale, I appreciate the safety/pleasure choices we make on land as well as the water.

I learned how to ride on a Triumph in Nepal, then I was kicked off and had to ride an Enfield Bullet. In Taiwan as a student I first had SanYang 125, but quickly upgraded to an Aprilia. I think I used up all of my motorcycle 9 lives, so I no longer ride. Never even got licensed in the US.

I was set to buy a Norton Commando in the fall of 1969, so we could have had that in common too. Had put a deposit down in Ann Arbor before leaving for the summer. In July Cycle World and Cycle arrived with tests of the new Honda 750. I read both magazines in the morning and called my dealer who sold both Norton and Honda and moved my deposit over- that is how I got one of the first ones in the US. I never even rode a Commando. Was upgrading from a 305 Super Hawk Honda, which at that time in my college town was a mid-sized bike, not many people had bigger British or German bikes and very few had Sportsters.

The heli ride is the most dangerous part. The off-piste is quite safe if you're a good skier, far safer than sharing a cruiser run at a major resort with a bunch of yahoos skiing waaaaay faster than their skill level should permit. I'm more afraid of bad skiers than I am of trees or avalanches.

I'm sure for a prudent skier, as I imagine you are, that's true. I was surprised at the percentage of non-illness related deaths of my cohort that things like skiing and kiteboarding made up.

A lot of that is speed, person-person or person-tree collision related. At ski areas I stay on double blacks, much too steep and tree covered to actually go fast. Heli is all untracked powder, you have a guide for every 5-6 people, everyone is avalanche trained, and you have a helicopter at your beck and call. Since only one small group is on any mountain face at a time, unless you have a young stupid person (known to happen) in the group, collisions are quite rare. I did a trip a couple of years ago where a big kid kept coming very close to me at the edge of control. I took him aside for a quiet talk and the problem ended.

I'm going again the end of February, I'll train in Taos between 9,000-12,000' altitude, then go to Nakusp, BC where the max elevation is less than 7,000'. Beth is coming to do yoga and hike.

Here in New England the most dangerous thing on the slope is the 200 pound guy skiing in jeans and a New York Giants jacket.

I think Rob and Charley have it right. The only serious injuries anyone in my family has ever had was from being hit on a ski slope. 30 years of backcountry skiing and zero problems, touch wood.
