Get your friends in on it Ajax, then you can have a convoy and really mess up the roads. Several times a year we get convoys traveling between Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) and training grounds east of the Cascades in Yakima. The HMMVs, Strykers, transporters, deuce and a halfs, tankers, etc really mess up rush hour if they deside to do it in daylight. It's fun to see all the different variations of equipment and honk & wave in support of the troops though. I almost bought an old Volvo L3314 which was for sale near me but couldn't justify it because I would not use it enough. It would have been fun though.

Olaf, that truck is very cool. :)

JoeP, I have some co-workers who are doing some serious chin scratching and "hmmm" ing. I'll probably the be only one with any balls to actually pull the trigger. My unit was based at Ft. McHenry, Baltimore, right next to the historic fort. I can tell you that driving these pigs in city traffic, trying to get to some site in Virginia or wherever was just awful. I never breathed a sigh of relief until we were squarely on I-97.

One week, we got a short fuse task to drive 3 Deuces from Baltimore to Williamsburg, VA to pick up a bunch of surplus gear. We were told "get it now, or it's gone." My CO looked at me and said "pick an A-driver and go, now." This was a multi-day trip and I had not even a toothbrush with me. I told the CO that our route would pass by my house by literally 5 minutes or less and could I stop at my house for an overnight bag? He gave me permission.

My kids and neighbor's eyes bugged out of their heads when I pulled into the driveway with that thing and tooted the horn.

After much analysis and soul searching, I am putting my recently purchased motorcycle up for sale.

I am simply overwhelmed at how traffic conditions have deteriorated in the past 5 years since I last owned a motorcycle.

- all the roads I normally ride are now in very poor conditions. Enormous potholes, loose asphalt
- traffic density is through the roof
- drivers are far more aggressive and far more careless than before

A co-worker was recently rear-ended and put in the hospital riding his Goldwing near where I live. This was a couple months ago.
This past Friday, a biker was hit and run just up the road from my house. A car parked on the shoulder, suddenly pulled out in front of him to make an illegal U-turn. The rider states that the car driver stopped, stared at him lying on the pavement in the oncoming traffic lane, gunned his engine and took off. This guy is also in the hospital.

Riding is not enjoyable. It's full of anxiety. Owning the bike simply doesn't make sense. I'm angry at myself for not noticing the worsening environment. I failed to do my due diligence.

I know just what you mean, brother.

I can't find the local stats on the proportion of serious accidents involving peds and (motor)cyclists that are hit and run, but one gets the feeling it's disturbingly high. Many say that anyone riding on the roads should have front and rear cameras. I hate the idea, but I understand it.

My nemesis is an elderly lady in a white Lexus who will stop if she notices she hit something. I know she's out there somewhere.

I often think of you out there, and I worry. I don't want to spend afternoons playing chess with you in the hospital.

I'm going to the opposite end of the spectrum- I think I've zeroed in on an M813 truck in decent condition, for a decent price.

If it causes me to develop the patience and working memory to play chess, that'll be some crash! I ride my bike because I'm too scattered and anxious to do anything else.

I thought you were kidding about the truck. What the hell is it for?

The first time I ever heard the well-known formulation "there are old ______, and there are bold _______, but there are no old, bold _______" the blank was filled with "motorcycle riders".

Ajax, sorry to hear that you're selling the motorcycle. I can certainly understand why. As a young man I rode 'em. After three accidents which destroyed the bikes I gave up. For two of the three accidents I was sitting still at a red light when I was hit. For the final accident I was in the slow lane getting ready to get off the freeway when a guy rear-ended me as he got on the freeway. After that I decided that there was nothing I could do to avoid that sort of accident. Given I'd had 3 in 5 years, I figured I wouldn't live much longer. I've got some scars from the learning experience.

I think you'll have more fun with the Monster Truck!

Oddly, I have seen quite a few of these in NYC, parked on Lexington Ave in the 20s, near the armory.

Must have a ride in it.

Haven't bought anything yet. Need to do something in the next couple of weeks. Trying to make a deal on a 2016 CPO Cayenne diesel with some original warranty also in force from a dealer in NJ who is playing the "why don't you come up and have a look" game rather than deal via email or phone. Doesn't seem to understand that I'm not driving a 7-8 hour round trip unless we have an agreement on price and any add on costs (basically, I want a negotiated closing sheet). Any trip will be to verify advertised condition (I've seen some cosmetically bad CPO cars in this search), give it a quick drive and hand them the check.

Found myself considering buying a leftover 2018 Ford Edge at the local dealer when the Porsche dealer started playing some games.

Your 5 ton is still crazy.

Did you expect anything less from a NJ dealer? Well, you're smart. You'll figure something out.

Since OM is being critical, I'd give him a rusty, 3 speed beach cruiser missing the seat to fetch his provisions.

Speaking of assholes, I was crossing a street (on foot) in Annapolis...really, it was a driveway leading up to a parking garage on West St. when a cyclist cut a left turn around me so sharp, that he ran over the toe of my shoe and I nearly accidentally knocked him off his bike. He blasted up the garage drive without so much as a "Fuck off!"

I think I have earned the right to tell this joke, as a 5 time former Porsche owner:

Trap set goes "Bada Crash" at this point and I get my hat.
