FL keys travel suggestions?

Postby avramd » Tue Apr 02, 2019 9:47 pm

Hey All,

I'm planning my first ever visit to the FL keys. This is a road trip, not a cruise. And as I research it, I'm becoming painfully aware of the irony of the fact that I own a trailerable trimaran, and am going to leave it on the trailer in cold and soon-to-be-rainy Newport, RI to drive to the FL keys, where it's starting to look is one of the few places that you have to choose between having a boat or a car, the boat is the way to go...

Anyway, I'm probably going to be there for 7-10 days. I'd like to do some tent-camping, and also spend a couple/few nights in AirBnB's or hotels. I'd love suggestions on where to tent and where is best to do each of those things. I should be getting there around the 14th/15th of this month.

I'd also love suggestions for things that I really ought to do while i'm there, although I'm going more to relax and do some very light exploring than I am to get up to a whole lot.

Thanks!

It's was about 13 years ago, but I had a very nice stay at this B & B in Key West.

The keys have some of the best snorkeling and diving. Key Largo is a good area for that.

My advice? Skip the Keys and go kayaking in the Okefenokee in FL and GA and inside the GA Sea Islands. Insanely beautiful, unlike anywhere else on earth, and off the Spring Break map. Stay in the state parks, which have cabins and tent sites.

Key Largo area:

Only went in and out by boat, but looked like a nice park.

Just south of Miami Beach there is a great park next to No Name Harbor. Don't know if they allow camping. Restaurant was very good.
