Those crafty vegans...

Postby Ajax » Thu Apr 18, 2019 11:30 am

Apparently vegans' plan to take over the world, is to create plant products that are indistinguishable from meat.

I brown bag it to work 99% of the time but today my co-workers convinced me to go to this vegan/soul food joint. I had pulled pork over brown rice, roasted Brussels sprouts and mac 'n cheese.
All completely vegan. The mac 'n cheese was cashew cheese. The "pulled pork" was tofu, somehow, and aside from a slightly chewier texture, was extremely close to the real thing. Their portions were extremely generous and the prices were not out of line. All of it was delicious. They gave me so much that I could only eat half.

Pretty amazing.

I will admit to liking that chewy tofu fake meat stuff, just for the texture. Vegan cheese, not so much.

Tofu is made from soy, part of government-subsidized big food along with corn.

It will also cause your tits to grow (well, not really, apparently).

I'll take regular old plants and nuts and shit for my vegan fare, thank you very much.

I just had a seared venison tenderloin burrito for lunch. The only thing that really compares is elk.

I feel different if I don't eat meat. I've tried it for a while (5 months) and didn't like the personality changes. The Admiral didn't like it either. So, I went back to eating meat and returned to "normal". (Yes, I know.....)

I love jackfruit - which apparently makes a good fake meat too. Meat or not; if it tastes good I'll eat it.

Never been terribly interested in food. For me, eating is something that just has to be done. Like breathing.

I'll graciously eat anything put in front of me except beets.

No problem if I never eat another four legged animal.

I'd sorta miss seafood and dairy.

It's higher in fat and sugars than you'd expect but I suppose that's because they're trying to cram as much energy as possible into a bottle.
It's basically "Ensure" for nerds, developed by Silicon Valley coders who think that sitting at a table, eating food, is a colossal waste of time. I think that this stuff would not be great for sedentary, computer nerds but could be OK for occasional meal replacements for someone who is active... such as a guy singlehanding a large boat in heavy weather who can't free himself from the helm long enough to make a meal.

I keep a case of it on hand with MRE's in my "hurricane" stash. Sometimes I bring a bottle on the boat when I'm doing a singlehanded, distance race.

In related news, Tesla has finally cleared the backlog of orders for batteries so they are ready to install my Powerwall. Assuming my roof survives the passage of a hurricane, I'll have power, water and food to endure an extended power outage.

You cannot put a healthy diet into a bag of powder. Whole (fresh or frozen) fruits and vegetables are essential and vitamin supplements are worthless.

Oh, I agree. Good luck convincing those Silicon Valley weirds of that. Over the past month, we've been crushing the FFV's at the house and the garden is growing.

.

I've seen my son with Soylent, but he's a computer geek, and so far as I can tell uses it only when immersed in coding and doesn't want distractions. At regular times he has a deep knowledge base of the best places to eat in Paris. According to my credit card, a few weeks ago he was eating quite well in Morocco, Beth says he's eating well in Romania this weekend.

His girlfriend took me out for the 2nd hottest meal of my life, what she said was a very authentic Chinese place in Paris. I believe her, as Chris and I were the only Occidentals in the joint. There was tofu swimming in chili and oil, among other things. The chili crusted lamb spareribs were excellent, hard to tell what was the hottest part of that meal, as after the first few bites all taste buds were cauterized and the sweating had begun, not to end until I was in the December night air without a jacket. My hottest meal was a steak burrito bought at a truck parked on a corner at the main intersection in Garden City, Texas, Pop. 300 or so. When that sucker decided to find a basement exit in the middle of the night it was an hour of singing "Ring of Fire".

I had bbq last night. Unusual for us. It was good. Pulled pork and beef. Ann had deep fried catfish.

The restaurant made a distinction between Carolina and Texas bbq. Anyone know the difference?

I had leftovers for lunch and there's still another lunch or two left. Crapload of food.

Carolina is a vinegar based sauce. Texas more tomato paste/sauce based.
