Long Reads - What I did on vacation

Postby BeauV » Sat Jun 15, 2019 12:26 pm

This last week I’ve had time to read, a real joy. Tiring of novels, I have wandered around the net and found some interesting bits. I thought others might have things to share, thus this topic.

This analysis of what we actually die of and what we read in the press is fascinating.

This article on homicide rates is also fascinating. People’s perceptions seem quite different from reality. The good old days were much more violent than people remember.

Mark Twain's books reflect this. In one, he describes seeing a lot of dead bodies perhaps due to a flood. He also reports on a steamboat explosion in which his brother died. Steamboats hardly ever explode anymore.
